Team Isle of Man athletes are now in Glasgow and preparing to compete in a Commonwealth Games that organisers say marks a new era for the event.
The squad brings together experienced Commonwealth Games competitors and athletes making their debut, a balance aimed at giving emerging Manx talent exposure at the world’s second‑largest multi‑sport event.
While the Opening Ceremony takes place this evening, Manx athletes will already be in action earlier in the day.
Mark McGreal lines up in the Bowls Men’s Singles, Sectional Play, with Caroline Whitehead and Paula Garrett competing in the Women’s Pairs.
Athletics gets underway from tomorrow.
Commonwealth Games Association President Basil Bielich said the team’s arrival in Glasgow comes after a period of uncertainty for the Games following Birmingham 2022.
He said the island was “very grateful” to Commonwealth Sport, the city of Glasgow and the 2026 organising committee for ensuring the event could go ahead, adding that the Games “still hold great prestige” for Manx athletes and play an important role in inspiring future competitors.
Bielich said the Games continue to show how sport can bring people together “across nations, cultures and generations” at a time when the world can often feel divided.
