Thomas Names His Council of Ministers

Chief Minister Chris Thomas has unveiled his eight-member Council of Ministers, with several newly elected MHKs taking on major government roles.

Among the appointments, first-term Rushen MHK Michael Crowe has been given responsibility for the Treasury, one of the most senior positions in government.

New Onchan MHK Rachel Glover will lead the Department of Environment, Food and Agriculture, while Arbory, Castletown and Malew MHK Jason Moorhouse takes charge of the Department of Infrastructure.

Sarah Maltby has been appointed Minister for Education, Sport and Culture, and newly elected Ramsey MHK Robert Cowell will head the Department for Enterprise.

Two ministers retain their existing portfolios, with Middle MHK Jane Poole-Wilson returning to the Department of Justice and Home Affairs and Claire Christian continuing as Minister for Health and Social Care.

The appointments complete the formation of Thomas’s Council of Ministers following his election as Chief Minister.

Thomas has adopted the role of Cabinet Office Minister as well as Chief Minister.

Get Things Done

He said: “I am pleased to have formed a team that will work together to get things done and deliver for the people of the Isle of Man.

“We must act to address the issues that matter to the public and ensure our Island is a place ‘where you can’.

“I look forward to engaging with all Members of Tynwald and working collaboratively to deliver change, tackle the challenges before us and make the most of the opportunities ahead.”

More Appointments to Come?

He added: “My priority this week, following discussions with many Members, has been to appoint ministers for the main Government departments with a breadth of experience and backgrounds.

“As the priorities of the new administration become clearer, there is still scope to support the Council of Ministers with further appointments.”

Thomas is this morning chairing his first meeting of the new Council of Ministers.

Departmental memberships and appointments to statutory boards and other public bodies will be announced at a later date.

One notable absence from the new Council of Ministers was Kirrie Jenkins, Thomas’ opponent for the position of Chief Minister.
