Training capacity for nurses on the Isle of Man will increase by almost 200% in 2025–26.
For the academic year 2025-26 Manx Care will host 95 medical students across the year.
The Health Minister says that the likelihood is that the number will be greater than 95, although the department has not received all the elective requests at the time of writing.
Medical Training
The number came to light in response to a written question to the Health Minister Claire Christian MHK from Onchan MHK Rob Callister.
He asked the Minister “How Manx Care supports healthcare assistants progressing to nurse training and how this compares to UK NHS support schemes; and whether local training places for nurses and doctors increase, decrease, or remain the same in 2025–26, and if she will make a statement”.
The answer revealed that the intake for the Bachelor of Nursing programme remains consistent, with 36 students commencing in September.
Manx Care currently supports:
• 15 Foundation Year 1 doctors (F1s)
• 13 Foundation Year 2 doctors (F2s)
• 6 Internal Medicine Training Scheme (IMTS) doctors
• 14 trainee General Practitioners (GPs) across all stages of their training.
These medical placements are delivered across hospital departments and general practices on the island, supported by the North West Medical Deanery.
Scheduled teaching sessions and clinical rotations confirm ongoing capacity for medical education.
The Minister added: “Manx Care remains committed to developing the Island’s health and care workforce through accessible, locally delivered training programmes that support career progression and meet service needs.”
