Presidential nominee Donald Trump has been shot in the ear at a rally in Pennsylvania.
The Secret Service said the attacker killed one spectator and two others are critically injured.
Mr Trump was giving a speech when a noise was heard, with him reaching for his ear before secret service agents swarmed the stage.
He has said he was “shot with a bullet that pierced the upper part of my right ear”.
“I knew immediately that something was wrong in that I heard a whizzing sound, shots, and immediately felt the bullet ripping through the skin.” the former president posted on his Truth Social account.
“Much bleeding took place, so I realised then what was happening.”
As security shot and killed the attacker, people in the crowd could be seen running and hiding behind chairs.
After being helped to his feet and surrounded by agents, Trump raised a defiant fist in the air to his supporters.
President Joe Biden has condemned the attack, saying: “There’s no place in America for this kind of violence. It’s sick, it’s sick.”
Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has said: “We condemn all forms of political violence in the strongest terms and we send our best wishes to President Trump and his family at this time.”
