The Department of Infrastructure will carry out planned works on the A18 Mountain Road next month.
The works are to ensure that the road remains fit for public use throughout the year and is prepared for the upcoming road race season.
Rather than a full closure across the whole Mountain, the work will be undertaken in two stages.
Closures
• Ramsey Hairpin to Bungalow – 2 days (9am Monday 22 until 10pm Tuesday 23 April)
• Bungalow to Creg-Ny-Baa -2 days (9am Monday 29 until 10pm Tuesday 30 April)
Planned works include, but not limited to
• Carriageway repairs
• Gully and drainage inspection and clearance
• Line marking
• Early season hedging and grass cutting (limited to areas required for road safety reasons)
• Black and white kerb painting
• Mountain Road bridges painting
• Sweeping
• Installation of signage ahead of the TT one-way system
• Deployment of signs and barriers for race closures
• Installation of electronic red flag system
• Testing of one way lights/barriers at Creg-Ny-Baa
• Snaefell Mountain Railway road signal maintenance
Highways have linked with the TT race organisers, who have arranged for their contactors to install all their race related equipment at the same time. This work includes placement of
• Recticel safety barriers
• Signaling kit
• Marshal shelters
• Marshal and TV scaffold towers
• Portable toilets
• Equipment boxes
Access arrangements
• Access to the Creg-Ny-Baa will be via Douglas and the Creg-Ny-Baa Back Road (and via Tholt-Y-Will during the first phase of works)
• Access to the area of the Bungalow (Tram Station, Victory and Snaefell Summit Café) will be maintained from the Tholt-Y-Will throughout, (together with either access from the north or the south dependent on which closure is current)
Reserve dates
The Mountain can still be a very challenging environment in April. It is not unknown to have snow, high winds, torrential rain, poor visibility or a combination of all. Should the weather forecast predict conditions that would halt activities there are reserve dates arranged.
• Wednesday 24 and Thursday 25 April for the northern section
• Wednesday 1 and Thursday 2 May for the southern section
