Manx Utilities chairman John Wannneburgh MHK says the approval of plans for a sewage treatment plant in Peel is an “extremely positive milestone”.
The island’s planning committee gave its unanimous back to the plans at its meeting on Monday.
Unless an appeal is lodged, various activities will need to be completed before work commences, including the transfer of land ownership to Manx Utilities and addressing the planning conditions required by the committee.
Manx Utilities said that depending on appeals, it wants to be construction in early autumn with screening facilities in place by the end of 2025 and flows being treated at the works by the end of 2026.
Huge improvement
Mr Wannenburgh said: “On completion, the works will provide a huge improvement to our marine environment and to Peel bathing water quality.
“Manx Utilities is appreciative of the support of the Peel community, and we look forward to providing more detail around the planned programme of works in the near future.”
Peel is currently served by a drainage system which collects at the pumping station on Shore Road before raw sewage is pumped out into the bay off the end of the breakwater.
The new site will see two or three tankers a day remove solid mass to be treated at Mary Veg as the Peel site will remove a “large percentage” of the solid mass in the pipes.
Objectors told the committee this could lead to between 160KG and 250KG a day of raw sewage making it through the system with the rest treated by UV lights.
