The MSPCA has been raising awareness about the use of electric shock collars on dogs.
That includes shocking volunteers at this year’s Agriculture Show.
Krysia Boruc of the MSPCA explained the initiative saying that the Manx public had shown a majority of support to keep the collars legal, despite bans in England, Wales, and parts of Europe.
She said: “We’re testing the collars on volunteers to show how painful they are, hoping to change minds.”
Krysia highlighted the risks: “This goes on a dog’s neck—a sensitive area. We start at level one and go up to eight, but imagine a dog unexpectedly shocked at level eight while running. It’s training out of fear, not progress.”
She added, “These collars can be bought online and used on any dog, even puppies. There are better methods, like spray or vibration collars, which are legal in the UK.”
Energy FM’s Beth Smith, who tried the collar, described the experience: “By level eight, it was unbearable. For a small dog, that shock would jolt their entire body.”
Krysia said: “We’ve progressed so much in dog training—why not ban this cruel tool?”
