A prospective candidate for Arbory, Castletown and Malew has pulled out of the race for the House of Keys, citing a realisation that his strengths are “better applied elsewhere”.
Jeroen Wats had announced his intention to stand in the 2026 election on 30 May. However, following weeks of engagement with constituents and “a great deal of reflection”, he confirmed he will not be on the ballot paper.
“The more support I received, the more seriously I took the responsibility that came with it,” Wats stated.
“People were not simply responding to a manifesto. They were placing their trust in me, and that forced me to think much more carefully about what elected office actually involves.”
Wats said his conversations led him to conclude that identifying problems differs greatly from delivering change within government. He acknowledged the constraints of budgets, process and compromise.
“Politics requires different strengths. It is built around process, debate, scrutiny, compromise and balancing competing priorities,” he said.
Reflection
Mr Wats emphasised his decision was not a criticism of the political system but a personal reflection on where he can best contribute.
“I cannot ask people to place their trust in me unless I am completely convinced this is the right path. After a great deal of reflection, I am no longer convinced that it is.”
Wats, who is involved in projects including the C1 Sailing Heritage Trust and ISEP, confirmed he will continue investing in business and innovation on the island.
“The Isle of Man has given me more than I could ever repay. It is my home, and it always will be.”
He wished other candidates well, adding: “Anyone willing to put themselves forward for public service deserves respect for doing so.”
Kirrie Jenkins is now the only candidate for the seat, with sitting MHK Jason Moorhouse yet to announce his intentions.
