Chief Minister Alf Cannan says the new interim Chief Executive Officer mark Lewin will remain in post for at least the next six months.
He said the need for stability amid external and internal challenges means it is not the right time to begin a recruitment process.
Addressing Mr Lwin’s appointment, Mr Cannan said he bring a “a significant track record in strategic delivery” and over a decade of civil service experience.
“The interim chief executive officer is well-regarded across government, and this period allows reflection on the role’s scope,” he said.
Review
The decision sparked questions from members with Chris Thomas (Douglas Central) asked whether the role itself was under review, noting concerns about its initial establishment.
Mr Cannan confirmed the review would assess both the role’s responsibilities and person specification, with input from the Operational Performance and Change Board.
Julie Edge (Onchan) pressed for transparency in future recruitment and raised concerns about interim posts exceeding 12 months, which could trigger employment rights. Mr Cannan reiterated his six-month timeline but emphasised the need for stability.
Lawrie Hooper (Ramsey) also highlighted broader succession planning failures, urging leadership development, something which Mr Cannan agreed with, acknowledging “a lack of individuals coming forward” and pledging to review training programmes.
Mr Cannan also provided assurances to John Wannenburgh (Douglas North) that the £50m efficiency project remained a priority, saying Mr Lewin was “urgently tackling” the initiative.
