The Met Office has upgraded the yellow weather warning to amber.
South or southwest winds this evening at first tonight are likely produce gusts between 60-70mph across the whole island, with a risk of 70-80mph in places.
This will give a possibility of some trees and branches being brought down, with a small risk of structural damage to buildings, before winds ease towards midnight and into the early hours.
At high tide (2am) winds will be decreasing, but the tide will be large and significant waves will break over exposed coastal areas, around parts of the south of the island particularly and some promenades (e.g. the north of Douglas prom).
The tide is not expected to cause any major harbour/quayside flooding issues, but the most susceptible places may see a little water for a time, e.g. close to the River Sulby in Ramsey.
It will be in force from 6pm to 3am Sunday.
