56% of Driving Tests Failed in 18 Months

There have been 2,154 driving tests failed during the last 18 months, the DoI Minister has revealed.

Dr Michelle Haywood was asked for the figures by Onchan MHK Rob Callister.

Mr Callister asked how many manual and automatic driving tests had been passed and failed in the 19 months and what percentage of passes in the same period have occurred at the candidate’s a) first and b) second test and what the top five reasons have been for failing.

Dr Haywood said that during that time, 3,806 car driving tests were taken of which 1,652 passed and 2,154 failed.

She added: “The Department does not hold data on whether the tests were taken in manual or automatic vehicles nor on the number of attempts taken to pass the test.

“The Department does not have a consolidated record holding the data requested regarding the reasons for failing a driving test.

“The reasons for failing are captured only on the individual test record, along with a description of the conditions and the reasons for failure.”
