A retired hospitality businessman has thrown his hat into the ring for the Glenfaba & Peel constituency.
Andrew Harris, who has lived on the island since 2005, confirmed his candidacy this week, citing concerns over government spending and departmental inefficiencies.
“Listening to what all have said to me, its about the frivolous spending, where they have been paying out on projects. Our taxes,” Mr Harris said.
The former Woodbourne Hotel boss highlighted the Department of Infrastructure as a particular concern, describing it as “the biggest shambles”.
His campaign priorities include healthcare, housing, and the cost of living crisis, alongside support for the farming community and the Meat Plant.
“The farmers need to help to sustain the island, as well as our Meat plant. Without relying on a retail company having a strangle hold,” he added.
Mr Harris also raised questions about the Isle of Man Steam Packet Company, noting that TT attendance figures were “1,600 passengers down on last year”.
“It’s our lifeline, let’s make sure that its affordable to get off the island us the residents, as well as visitors coming here,” he said.
On the issue of identification for travel, the candidate expressed support for the current system.
“Standard ID card or use your passport/drivers licence. It’s not a ‘big brother’ thing. At least we would know who actually lives here,” Mr Harris stated.
He has also promised a transparent approach to governance and criticised the current administration for losing touch with Islanders.
“House of Keys should be working as a team, making the right decision for you. They have lost touch with reality, islanders,” he said.
James Hampton has previously declared his intention to contest the constituency, sitting MHKs Kate Lord-Brennan and Tim Crookall have yet to announce their intentions.
