Between August 14, 2019 and February 29, 2024 the Isle of Man Government made 176 overpayments in pensions, resulting in a total overpayment of £190,765.76.
A Freedom of Information (FOI) request asked how much money had been overpaid in civil service pensions since August 2019.
In the answer to the FOI, it revealed that ‘80% of these overpayments are as a result of notification of death after that periods payment has been made’.

However, the FOI response states that £118,568.21 of the total net amount that had been overspent has been recovered.
The outstanding amount is either due to outstanding repayment plans or is with the Estate of the deceased pensioner.
The total net amount written off over this period was £297.82. This was due to the deceased pensioners Estate having no monies
to repay.
If there has been an overpayment for an existing pensioner then there will be agreed repayment plan in place to reclaim the outstanding overpayment.
As these are still active there will be outstanding debt as the full overpayment has not been recovered.
If the pensioner has deceased the debt will be passed to the estate and Isle of Man Government are awaiting repayment.
