Play Explores Mining Disaster

A play about the Snaefell Mine Disaster will take to the Gaiety later this month.

Candles is a two night production written by Chris Maybury with music written by Nick Roberts and choreographed by Susannah Maybury.

The play with music is based around the tragic events of 1897 which began with a small candle in a mine and ended in the devastation of communities around the island.

Production company, Yn Draamey said: “Candles explores the impact that one small event – an improperly snuffed candle – can have on a whole community.

“The loss and heartbreak are counterpointed with acts of practical heroism.

“A flame is very like a living being. It requires fuel and oxygen. Like many organisms it is capable of snuffing out another life. Candles mixes the pride of a mining community with the sadness and guilt of the women who were left behind and the men who survived.”
