Treasury Minister Dr Alex Allinson says the proposed changes to pensions are not in breach of the Equality Act.
He was quizzed on this by Onchan MHK Julie Edge this morning.
The minister said that while the proposed change would create a break between those who retired before and after 2019, this isn’t unusual as there are “different benefits and different rates of benefits according to a person’s age”.
He added: “For example, the old state retirement pension is applicable only to people who reach state pension age before April 6 2019, individuals who reach state pension age after this cannot access the previous state retirement pension.
“They must claim the new Manx state pension, even though the rates payable for each is quite different.”
He also said that he is confident that if the matter was challenged in a court then he is “quite satisfied” that it would not be found to have breached the law.
