On The Rink: Mark McGreal 2–0 Win Over Namibia

Mark McGreal (Team Isle of Man Bowls)

Commonwealth Games – Glasgow 2026

Mark McGreal continued his strong singles campaign in Glasgow with a controlled 2–0 victory over Namibia in the morning session, a result that keeps the Isle of Man firmly in the mix..

He admitted the Australia match is still lingering in his mind, saying it’s the one that will “kick” him because of how tight the group is. “Only the winner of the group progresses to the knockout stage,” he said, adding that he now needs Aaron Wilson to “slip up” while he maintains his current level. Even so, McGreal was satisfied with how he handled Namibia, noting, “I’m doing my best, that’s all I can do.”

The second set demanded more work, with McGreal acknowledging a fortunate connection on the penultimate end. “Really pleased with the performance. Can’t fault it,” he said. “We had to work for it in the second set, particularly with a fortunate connection, but no complaints.”

He remains proud of how he pushed Wilson, one of the world’s top bowlers, earlier in the week. There is no shame in losing to one of the best bowlers in the world. McGreal said he was “Proud of the performance. Pushed him as well. The Aussies were complimentary of how well I played.”

McGreal noted the rink felt slightly quicker this morning, taking a few ends to settle into the pace. “It was a little bit through the head with the first few bowls,” he said. “But the lines are bedded in now, relatively consistent. As long as you’ve got good weight and find a line, you’re there or thereabouts.”

Pairs

With pairs starting Wednesday, McGreal believes his form is arriving at exactly the right moment. “If Michael (Collister) can match me, then if I keep performing like that, I think we’ll certainly give people a fright.”

Round 7

As he moved into Round 7 against Guernsey’s Jason Greenslade, McGreal knows a win this afternoon could secure second in the group and potentially a fifth‑place overall ranking. This is a result that would underline what he’s shown all week: the Isle of Man can perform, and perform well, on the big stage.
