The Isle of Man’s youth justice system faces mounting pressure, with magistrates calling for expanded alternatives to traditional sentencing.
Dan Davies, Chief Officer of Home Affairs, told a Tynwald committee: ” The magistrates are frustrated at the lack of disposals, but part of the work we’re doing on tagging will allow tags to be issued, to be used for young people.”
A new “Target Operating Model” is underway to address gaps.
Mr Davies noted: “Our hope for the report… is something that is practical, that can be used within current resource.
“But if we had a bit more money or a bit more resource, this is what we could do.”
Justice Minister Jane Poole-Wilson MHK highlighted legislative challenges and pointed to the Multi-Agency Safeguarding Hub’s success in improving collaboration but acknowledged its limitations for youth-specific interventions.
