A planning application has been submitted to convert an agricultural barn at West Nappin Farm, Jurby, into an events venue.
The proposal, by farmer Ryan Cleator and designed by Wilson Consulting, aims to preserve the barn’s traditional character while creating a versatile space for weddings, corporate events, and community gatherings.
The Cleator family, who have farmed in Jurby for generations, see the conversion as vital to securing the farm’s future.
Their application says: “These stone barns are now not suitable for modern farming, and they need to have a practical use so the buildings can be properly maintained.”
The farm has already hosted successful seasonal events, demonstrating the venue’s potential.
Proposals
John Wilson, the project’s architect, emphasised minimal alterations: “Externally, the proposals are largely limited to installing doors and windows into existing openings, without changing the size or appearance of those openings.”
The roadside elevations will remain unchanged, with Crittall-style black-framed windows maintaining the barn’s agricultural aesthetic.
Internally, the rustic features—exposed stone walls and timber A-frames—will be retained, alongside modern amenities like accessible restrooms and a fully equipped kitchen aiming to deliver economic benefits, including job creation and support for local businesses.
