Policy to Put Children First

Government is preparing to publish a Child First policy to consider the welfare and best interests of children in public policies and services.

The Cabinet Office is keen to hear the views of children to inform the policy.

During the next four weeks it is engaging with children’s groups and service providers to gather perspectives.

Minister for the Cabinet Office, David Ashford MHK, said: “It is important to hear the voices of children in the design of this policy, we want to know what the children and people of the Isle of Man would like a Child First policy to include.

“For these reasons it is vital that we have the benefit of input from those who work with, and support children.

“The island is renowned for being a beautiful and safe place to live, and we are committed to making it an even better place for children to grow up.

“A Child First policy will help to achieve this. It will ensure we prioritise the perspectives of children and best serve their needs to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for our young residents.”

New Policy

The Child First Policy approach intends to guide all government departments to focus on the needs of young residents when designing services and policies.

The policy will sit above work already ongoing and underpin the government’s commitment to a supportive and inclusive environment for children across the island.

A Child First policy could inform how government works by:

• Making policies that recognise that children’s views and needs differ from adults;
• Sustaining a strong focus on child safeguarding;
• Prioritising opportunities to thrive and overcome barriers;
• Actively listening to children’s voices;
• Planning long-term for the best interests of children’s futures;
• Upholding and supporting children’s rights.
