Manx Concert Brass will proudly represent the Isle of Man this Friday at the renowned Saddleworth & Oldham Whit Friday Band Contest.
Often hailed as ‘the greatest free show on Earth’, the contest attracts over a hundred bands from across the UK and Europe, performing in villages throughout Saddleworth.
Thousands of spectators line the streets to enjoy the spectacle, which dates back 150 years.
Band chairman Stephen Maddocks said: ‘The Whit Friday Band Contests are a tradition which go back around 150 years with bands travelling between each venue, competing for prizes.’
Blind
Manx Concert Brass will perform across multiple venues, including Dobcross, Diggle, Uppermill, and Delph. Each band must complete a street march and contest piece at every location, racing against the clock to impress judges.
‘As the competitors dash from contest to contest with their instruments, performing in front of thousands of spectators, there is a real party atmosphere and a sense of camaraderie and celebration,’Maddocks added. ‘It’s completely unique and we are very excited about taking part.’
A hallmark of the event is its spontaneity—bands arrive unannounced, keeping audiences on their toes. Judging is conducted ‘blind’, with adjudicators often seated out of sight to focus solely on musical performance.
