Residents in multiple Peel housing estates have logged numerous complaints about sewage odours over the past decade, with the vast majority concerning privately-owned infrastructure.
The details were disclosed by the Chair of Manx Utilities, John Wannenburgh, in a series of written responses to Tynwald questions from Glenfaba & Peel MHK Kate Lord-Brennan.
The data shows 26 complaints related to odour from drains and pumping stations in the Reayrt Ny Kelley, Reayrt Ny Cronk, Sileau Whallian View and Ballawattleworth estates have been recorded since 2010.
Mr Wannenburgh said most related to sites owned by a developer, with complaints directed to them.
He explained the standard procedure, saying: “In the event of residents raising complaints regarding private infrastructure, in most instances the complainant would be directed to the developer as the party responsible for the infrastructure.”
While a pumping station in Reayrt Ny Kelley is owned by Manx Utilities, a separate pumping station and a temporary treatment works in the Sileau Whallian View/Reayrt Ny Cronk Estate are “currently owned and maintained by Dandara”.
This private infrastructure, constructed around 2010-2011, serves approximately 282 properties.
Mr Wannenburgh confirmed a formal agreement is in place for future public adoption, saying: “There is a Section 8 Agreement in place with the developer which sets out the standards of construction required for future adoption.”
The temporary treatment works at Slieau Whallian View/Reayrt Ny Cronk Estate is planned for decommissioning upon completion of the new Peel Wastewater Treatment Works.
