Government House has hosted a reception to celebrate The Very Reverend Nigel Godfrey’s MBE.
Nigel Godfrey was made an MBE in the 2025 King’s Birthday Honours List for Outstanding Service to Church and Community in the United Kingdom and in the Isle of Man.
Born and educated on the island, Reverend Godfrey served for two decades at Christ Church, Brixton, where he revitalised a struggling parish and transformed the church buildings for community use.
His work was described by The Church Times as “one of the most extraordinary success stories in the established church”.
In 2007, he returned home as Vicar of St German’s and became Dean of Cathedral Isle of Man in 2011.
Compassion
Government House said: “Facing declining congregations and deteriorating buildings, he brought vision, energy, and deep compassion to the challenge.
“He consulted widely and inspired others with his belief in what the Cathedral could become: a spiritual, cultural, and community heart for the island.
“Central to his legacy is the creation of a ‘Cathedral Precinct’, beginning with 17 religious gardens reflecting the Island’s Christian heritage.
“This laid the foundation for extensive internal reordering of the Cathedral – including new facilities, underfloor heating, and improved access – completed thanks to his tireless fundraising, personal financial contribution, and the support that he inspired in others.”
It added: “Under his guidance, the Cathedral now serves people of all faiths and none – offering worship, cultural events, and vital outreach such as the weekly ‘Big Table’ lunch and Warm Space provision.
“Congratulations to Reverend Godfrey! The island is lucky to have you.”
