The government’s new transport strategy includes plans for ‘robust policies’ to end the registration of petrol and diesel cars.
The new transport strategy for 2025-2035, outlining a vision for a safe, sustainable, and equitable transport system.
The strategy commits to facilitating the adoption of zero-emission vehicles (ZEVs).
It says: “Robust polices are needed to support this transition, including incentives to promote the uptake of EVs and mechanisms to accelerate the phasing out of ICE vehicles.
“This must be supported by continued and coordinated investment in EV charging infrastructure across the island, and work to address barriers to the uptake of EVs in commercial fleets, including taxi services.”

The government also says it will “support research, development, testing and piloting of automated transport technologies and services which have potential to transform travel on the island”.
For micromobility, such as e-scooters and e-bikes, the strategy pledges to “introduce regulations which apply to micromobility devices to reduce barriers to the uptake of these modes”.
The government also commits to “assess and adopt the most appropriate new and emerging technologies to enhance the management of traffic”.
The overall vision is a transport system that supports economic and population growth while decarbonising.
