Staff & Residents ‘deserve a better quality facility’

Lawrie Hooper MHK has expressed his concerns about the delayed replacement of the Cummal Mooar care home in Ramsey.

Despite initial assurances from the Health Minister, and promises of regular updates, Hooper says he has not received any information.

The Ramsey MHK has put in several written questions regarding the last Manx Care operated residential care facility in the north.

Deserve Better

Speaking to Manx.News, Mr Hooper said: “I think the concerns are the building itself, we know, isn’t up to modern standards.

“And despite the fact that the staff there are brilliant and do an amazing job, actually, the residents are pretty happy by large.

“They deserve a better quality facility. The staff and the residents do, and so my worry is, if this doesn’t go ahead, does that mean we’re not going to be providing those staff and those residents with the best possible place to live and work. Actually, we’re probably not.”

A Much Needed Facility

Mr Hooper added: “So we do need that new facility. It’s really important to me as well, that facility is kept as a government facility in some way, because, as you know yourself, private care on the Isle of Man is quite expensive, especially when it’s long term, when it’s that level of care that’s needed and what they provide in Cummal Mooar is pretty decent, and we need to make sure that there is a service that’s available for everybody.

“And so I’m quite worried that this doesn’t go ahead. I don’t know what the future looks like for care in Ramsey care, in the north from a government perspective, and that is another big question that needs to be answered.”
