Concern Weekend Closure Will be Permanent

A Ramsey Commissioner says it is disappointing to learn that the Minor Injuries Unit will not be reopening on weekends.

The closure was first announced in July 2024 as a temporary three-month measure to address staffing shortages, but this has been extended several times.

This week, Health Minister Clare Christian said that reopening would require additional agency spending and would result in an overspend.

Ramsey Commissioner Juan McGuinness said: “It is disappointing to see this pattern continue.

“Ramsey Cottage Hospital is an important facility for the north of the island and many people are beginning to struggle to trust assurances that it remains supported when the actions taking place suggest otherwise.”

He added: “I am concerned that the current 18 month long ‘temporary’ weekend closure could become absolutely permanent, and that this may be the thin end of the wedge leading to further reductions in the operating hours and days of the MIU.”

Ms Christian said a decision will be made on the weekend closure of Ramsey MIU by the end of January next year.
