The Isle of Man has lost one of its most cherished entertainers and creative spirits with the passing of Colin Boardman. Known to many as a gentle, kind-hearted friend, Colin’s life was defined by his ability to bring joy, wonder, and artistry to those around him.
Colin passed away on Saturday at Hospice Isle of Man.
While Colin was known locally as a children’s entertainer alongside Rex, his talents reached far beyond the Island. In 1974, he won The Magic Circle Young Magician of the Year competition with his remarkable budgies act—a performance that captivated audiences and earned him national recognition. His skill and charm soon led to appearances on iconic television programmes including Blue Peter, New Faces, and The David Nixon Show, cementing his reputation as a magician of rare talent.
Rex and Colin: Childhood Memories of the 1980s
For many children growing up in the 1980s, Colin was one half of the much-loved duo “Rex and Colin”, alongside ‘Uncle’ Rex Graham. Together they ran kids’ clubs in church halls across the Island, filling weekends with discos, games, and magic shows. Their blend of fun and wonder left lasting memories for a generation of Manx children. Rex Graham passed away in January 2014, but the joy the pair created together lives on in the fond recollections of those who attended their shows.
Honoured at Home
Colin’s contribution to the art of magic was celebrated closer to home when he was awarded the title of Magician of Mann in 2015. It was a fitting recognition for a man who had spent decades inspiring wonder in audiences young and old, and who carried the Island’s name proudly into the wider world of performance.

In later years, Colin turned his creative eye to photography. With the same patience and artistry that defined his magic, he captured striking images of Peel and beyond, sharing the beauty of the Island through his lens. His photographs became a new way of storytelling—quiet, thoughtful, and deeply connected to place.
