A new vocational training hub at the Isle of Man Prison has been formally opened by His Excellency the Lieutenant Governor Sir John Lorimer.
More than 60 guests attended the launch of the Ellan Vannin Skills Centre (EVSC), including representatives from City & Guilds, construction industry partners, MHKs, local commissioners and former learners who have completed training programmes inside the prison.
The centre has been a City & Guilds Approved Centre for over a year, supported by employers on and off‑Island. Guests were able to tour the facilities and see training in action across plastering, fibrous plasterwork, bricklaying and plumbing.
Learners spoke directly with visitors about the impact of the centre, highlighting not only the qualifications gained but the confidence and motivation it has helped build.
Governor of the Isle of Man Prison and Probation Service Leroy Bonnick said the opening marked “an important moment” for the prison and wider community:
“The Skills Centre is built on a simple belief: that with the right skills, support and opportunity, people can achieve real and lasting change.”
The centre focuses on helping prisoners become work‑ready, and the event prompted renewed interest from local businesses keen to form partnerships to support rehabilitation and reintegration.
Building Skills Lecturer Jon Dunne said the response from employers and the public had been “overwhelming”, adding that the centre’s “work‑ready” ethos is now becoming a reality for learners and the community.
