Two MHKs have submitted a joint objection to proposals for a construction compound on the field at the junction of Ballanard Road and Baldwin Road.
David Ashford MHK and John Wannenburgh MHK say the site has served as valued community green space for more than 80 years.
Ashford said both he and Wannenburgh fully support the refurbishment of the Willaston estate, but believe the chosen location is “simply not the right site” and that “alternative options are available”.
He said the pair had already put forward an alternative compound location outside the estate which they “still believe is viable”.
The field in question has been open space since 1935, predating the development of Willaston by more than a decade, and, the members argue, has long been used by residents of both Ballanard and Willaston.
Losing it “even temporarily”, Ashford said, would be detrimental to the area, adding that a period of six years or more “doesn’t really count as temporary”.
With the application due to come before the Planning Committee shortly, the constituency members are urging residents who wish to object to do so now.
