Manx TT rider Jamie Cringle has undergone a series of major surgeries as he continues what his family describe as the “hardest fight he’s ever had.”
Cringle was transferred to Aintree Hospital last week after suffering multiple serious injuries in Friday’s Supersport race,
Jamie’s brother, Ryan, said surgeons operated on Jamie’s spine over the weekend after discovering a burst fracture of his L3 vertebra.
His lower spine has now been fused from L1 to L5, with 10 screws and two rods permanently fixing the vertebrae in place. While the discs will adapt to the new position, the ligaments will not recover, meaning Jamie will face long‑term restrictions to mobility. A vacuum drain remains in place and will be removed later.
Following the spinal operation, Jamie was placed into a medically induced coma after struggling to get enough oxygen due to injuries to his sternum and lungs. He also required a blood transfusion to restore red blood cell and haemoglobin levels.
On Tuesday, Jamie underwent a further five‑hour operation on his right leg. Surgeons fitted a more robust external cage with multiple rods to stabilise his tibia and fibula, and performed a skin graft from his thigh to close the wound. More surgery is still required, including inserting a nail down the tibia. His broken left ankle, currently in a back slab, also awaits surgery.
Ryan said Jamie is heavily sedated but “reactive to our voices,” even attempting to pull at his tubes. He thanked supporters for their messages, saying the family will read them to Jamie when he is able.
Jamie will now be given several days’ rest before facing the next stage of treatment.
A fundraiser has been set up to aid Jamie in keeping his newly launched plumbing business afloat while he recovers. Friends say he would “never ask for help”, which is why a fundraising effort has been set up on his behalf.
