Manx rider Tommy Bass has won the General Classification at the European Youth Cycling Tour in Assen after a standout week.
Tommy is the first ever Manx winner of the event, having previously finished second on GC – a feat matched by Sir Mark Cavendish.
Competing in the U15 boys, Bass began the final stage with a 19‑second lead and needed only to finish with the front group to secure the yellow jersey.
He delivered under pressure, following the plan set by coach Andrew Roche and holding position despite a packed and competitive field.
Remarkable Recovery
His overall win capped a remarkable recovery after a heavy crash earlier in the week. Bass clawed back a 47‑second deficit mid‑week, produced a strong time trial, and maintained control through the closing stages to seal the title.
His stage win last Tuesday (July 28) was his 4th stage win at the event.
Riders from across Europe, Asia and the Middle East took part in the event, adding to the scale of the achievement.
His parents said they “couldn’t be prouder”, praising his commitment, the support team around him, and the effort involved in travelling and competing at this level.
Doing The Island Proud
As wall as Tommy, the island had strong representation from Daniel Minay, Thomas Hutchinson, Elliot Barron, Austin and Jenson Baglow who also raced in the five day tour.
The five boys all rode very well in difficult, hot conditions and against some of the best youth talent about.
With strong rides from all Manx riders, the future of cycling on the Isle of Man is in very safe, and exciting, hands.
