Angus Takes on Marathon in Aid of Home of Rest

A Manx runner is preparing to take on the Amsterdam Marathon to raise funds for the Isle of Man Home of Rest for Old Horses.

Angus Wicke, who ran the Isle of Man Half Marathon last August, chose Amsterdam for his first full 42.1km challenge, calling it “the flattest place I could find” as he steps up to one of the biggest physical tests of his life.

His training route regularly takes him up Richmond Hill, past the Home and its residents.

He said the charity has “always had a special place” in his family’s heart and hopes to raise as much as possible to support the 34 horses, 12 ponies and 10 donkeys living in retirement at the Home. His initial £1,000 target has already been met, and he is now aiming for the next £1,000.

The Home, which receives no government funding, relies entirely on donations, fundraising and legacies.

General Manager Laura Bruder said Angus’s effort would make a meaningful difference, noting that £20 – £25 covers a farrier visit, £33.50 buys a bale of hay and £60 pays for an equine dental check.

Annual costs include around £11,000 for hay, £10,000 for veterinary bills, and £7,000 for lime and fertiliser.

Angus’s fundraising page is now live, with donations of any size welcomed.
