Douglas Council has initiated early-stage plans to relocate the local authority-owned allotments at Johnny Watterson’s Lane, as the site is required for the future expansion of the Lawn Cemetery.
The land was originally purchased in 2000 with the primary purpose of creating the capital’s Lawn Cemetery, with the neighbouring allotment area earmarked for its long-term expansion.
Current forecasts indicate the cemetery will likely need additional space within the next four years, necessitating the allotments’ move.
The Council has stressed that no immediate changes are planned and plot holders can continue using their sites for several more years, with an anticipated relocation timeframe of 2028.

Natalie Byron-Teare, Chair of the Regeneration and Community Committee, said: “Allotments are a valued community asset and we are committed to working closely with all of our allotment holders to identify an appropriate alternative site and ensure continuity.
“Although the need for future cemetery expansion has been known for some time, we want to make sure everyone has plenty of notice and feels supported throughout the process.”
The Council has begun writing to all affected allotment holders to inform them of the situation and commence engagement.
Mrs Byron-Teare added: “We will continue to communicate openly and work carefully and considerately as plans develop. If anyone has questions, concerns, or would like to speak with us directly, they are very welcome to get in touch.”
