Amber weather warning issued for heavy rain

An amber weather warning has been issued today (December 30) for heavy rain.

The weather warning came into place at 7am and is to stay until 2pm.

This morning, heavy rain is expected to give a further 15-20mm at low-levels with 30-40mm over high ground.

According to the Met Office, this will allow standing water in prone locations as well as a moderate risk of localised flooding, especially in areas that were recently affected by flooding.

In addition, strong to gale force south or southeast winds will allow minor coastal overtopping and slight debris on exposed coasts and promenades around the time of high tide (1:15pm).

Areas at risk include Douglas promenade (including prom parking), Laxey prom, Ramsey prom, Shore Rd Rushen and Castletown prom.

Saturday afternoon

The wind will ease as it turns to the south in the early afternoon, and the rain will largely clear with just a few showery outbreaks remaining for the rest of the afternoon.

Although showers are likely to become more frequent this evening and tonight with temperatures up to 10C.

Outlook

Tomorrow (December 31) there is potential for rain or showers, accompanied with a fresh to strong southerly wind turning to the west in the afternoon.

New Years Day (January 1) is looking to be a brighter and generally and becoming less windy.
