A well known Manx historian and film maker has labelled the proposals for a new visitor hub at Laxey Wheel as ‘dreadful’.
Charles Guard, a former broadcaster and former administrator of Culture Vannin, has released an amusing but highly critical reel about the proposals by Manx National Heritage (MNH) to replace the gatehouse at the world famous water wheel.
The heritage body revealed their plans last month (November 2023) and they were met with objections.
Not Appropriate
Garff Commissions objected to the design when it was first announced in November and have asked MNH to redesign their plans..
The current kiosk was built in 1986 and MNH said the current space provides a “poor visitor welcome with no opportunity for shelter and limited retail opportunities”.
“It is the view of members that the design and quality of the proposed structure is not appropriate for a site of such cultural importance.
Garff Commissioners
Garff Commissioners said “The board will be requesting that MNH bring forward a new proposal that more appropriately respects the heritage of the Laxey Wheel in terms of both construction materials and design.”
The Laxey Wheel, also known the Lady Isabella, was built in 1854 to pump water from the Laxey Mines and has become an iconic tourist attraction.
The Wheel was closed for two years for restoration and repairs to take place. It reopened and began turning again in 2022.
