The government is to set about creating regulations to allow the Police to utilise ANPR software.
In practice the Constabulary will join the national ANPR network which operates across the United Kingdom.
The DHA and the Police say this will be introduced in two steps, with cameras at the Sea Terminal eventually being used to record vehicle journeys on and off the island.
At first, probably in March, access will be given to Manx officers to the UK database, which will allow the Constabulary to manually search for vehicles on the UK system and set alerts.
This will allow officers to identify the movements of vehicles involved in criminal investigations prior to their arrival in the Isle of Man and to circulate intelligence material relating to vehicles involved in crime to UK forces.
The second step, probably in May, will see the cameras at ports being connected to the UK database.
Cameras will scan vehicles leaving and arriving, and any existing alerts on the system will be immediately flagged, it also means if a vehicle is stopped the movement or stop history is available to view.
