Proposed changes to pensions will be the subject of several questions in Keys tomorrow, including whether it will even be lawful.
Julie Edge and Chris Thomas will be asking four questions between them on the proposed changes, which will almost certainly garner a flurry of supplementary questions.
Ms Edge will begin the session by asking the Treasury Minister whether the proposed changes to the pensions triple lock comply with the Equality Act; and if he will make a statement on the issue?
She will later ask him pre-2019 pensioners will retain the triple lock and what this will cost, as well as how many post-2019 pensioners are due to benefit from the triple lock and what cutting this will save.
Mr Thomas will later ask what Dr Allinson concludes from his national conversation regarding (a) breaking the link with earnings growth for the Manx State Pension and (b) potentially reducing the National Insurance Fund size by around £500 million; and what plans he has in respect of these matters?
Motion
Ms Edge will later move a motion that could see MHKs insist that the changes should not be implemented as part of this year’s Budget and that the Treasury should ensure a separate motion is tabled with regard to the future uprating of the Manx State Pension when the Budget is tabled.
Call my cynical, but I’m going to say that thanks to the extra minister we apparently needed after all these years, plus the Treasury member in Keys, there will be 11 votes against before Ms Edge has even started, early prediction for a 13-11 loss, which, if it happens, we could see the Budget go the same way next week.
