Application Made to Extend Cemetery

An application has been submitted to extend the cemetery at Kirk German New Cemetery on Douglas Road.

Wardens say without acquiring more land, the cemetery will likely be full within 10 years.

Cathedral Isle of Man, represented by The Very Reverend Nigel Godfrey, has applied to purchase and develop a field adjacent to the existing site.

In the application, it states: “The cemetery has limited capacity remaining and we will run out of space within a decade. The opportunity has arisen to buy the neighbouring land as there is a willing seller.”

The proposal includes creating a new access point by breaking through the cemetery wall, with funeral corteges using the existing roadway.

Engineers confirm the land’s suitability, with the extension expected to provide “several thousand plots,” each potentially holding “2-3 burials”.

Landscaping plans include native trees and shrubs to enhance the area and screen the current cemetery.
