The Assisted Dying Bill has passed its third reading in the House of Keys.
Dr Alex Allinson’s private members’ bill would introduce a right to allow terminally ill residents the right to end their lives.
Members debated the Bill’s third reading in depth, as they considered whether to allow it to be sent to the Legislative Council.
The lengthy debate saw members raise concerns over the speed the bill had progressed, the way such a system could be funded and whether enough safeguards would protect the most vulnerable in society.
There were also concerns over whether or not the public had supported the bill, whether people were aware of the changes implemented throughout the clauses stage and whether doctors will be able, or indeed willing to staff it.
Despite these concerns, MHKs voted 16 for, eight against to send the Bill to LegCo to consider.
