The Assisted Dying Bill will return to Keys after MLCs passed its final reading this morning.
After making amendments to the Bill members voted to send it back to MHKs for their consideration.
If approved the Bill would mean the island could become the first place in the British Isles to legalise a system that would allow terminally ill people to end their lives.
Mover Peter Greenhill told members he was “very pleased” to bring the Bill forward for its final stage and thanked members for their debates, amendments and consideration throughout.
He said: “The bill before us is to enable certain adults that are terminally ill to be able to choose to be provided with specified assistance to end their suffering and to choose to end their own life. It’s about choice for those who are about to die.
“I fully respect that many people would not wish to make that choice, but this bill is for those that do.”
Members voted seven in favour and one against (Paul Craine) for the Bill, with the Bishop being absent from the sitting.
