Assisted dying report pushed back

Legislative Buildings

A committee report examining a Private Member’s Bill that would allow terminally ill residents the right to seek a medically assisted death has been delayed

Chairman of the committee David Ashford updates the Keys this week and said the committee is waiting on two stakeholders and it wants to consider those views fully.

The Douglas North MHK told Keys: ‘Whilst not reporting by the end of February, I’m pleased to advise that the report is very nearly and substantively complete.

‘The committee are just awaiting two final submissions expected very shortly. These have been promised by two important stakeholders and the view of the committee is that their submissions will merit proper consideration.’

Mr Ashford said the committee should be ready to publish its report by the end of March, if not sooner.

The committee consists of Dr Alex Allinson, who moved the Bill, Onchan MHK Rob Callister, Mr Ashford, Rushen MHK Michelle Haywood and Health Minister Lawrie Hooper.
