Onchan District Commissioners has raised concerns over governance and priorities in the DoI’s planned 20mph rollout.
The authority has submitted a formal response public consultation on proposed 20mph speed limits, which can be found below.
In a letter to the DoI Programme Delivery Manager, the board said: “The installation of new street furniture within the District prior to the consultation ending did not display the department acting with good governance in relation to selflessness, accountability, openness, honesty, and leadership.”
The authority also criticised the online mapping system, which it said limits public participation by only allowing comments on individual roads.
Maintenance
The board argued that highway maintenance should take precedence, citing resident concerns over “road and footpath resurfacing, drainage improvements, and traffic light signals at the junction adjacent to the Manx Arms public house”.
While acknowledging the rationale for 20mph limits in residential “home zones,” the board urged a trial period for high-traffic roads, similar to temporary TT restrictions.
“Following the completion of a trial, the Department and the Authority may then be in a position to fully evaluate the advantages and disadvantages,” it wrote.
