A cafe in Maughold has been recognised for its contribution to the Island’s Autism Spectrum Condition Strategy and efforts to create a more autism‑friendly community.
Zen at the Glen received a Letter of Recognition from the Department of Health and Social Care.
The letter, signed by Health and Social Care Minister Claire Christian, acknowledges the café’s role in improving outcomes for autistic people and highlights its commitment to providing meaningful paid employment.
It currently employs three autistic staff members, along with another autistic team member who produces its artwork and café boards.
In a statement, business owner Kate Bergquist said social value had been central to its purpose from the day it opened, and that paying autistic adults fairly for their work “shouldn’t be remarkable”.
It also raised concerns about limited employability pathways for neurodiverse people on the Island, noting that too many opportunities remain voluntary rather than paid.
Kate said the recognition shows what is possible when businesses actively include neurodiverse staff, adding that wider adoption of similar practices would help the island’s autistic community to thrive.
