A father has launched a petition calling for a dedicated ARFID clinic, saying his step-children are living with the little-known eating disorder without local specialist support.
James Green said his step-daughter and step-son have Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID), a condition that goes “beyond mere picky eating” and can lead to “nutritional deficiencies, other severe health issues, and significant emotional distress”.
Currently, there are “no dedicated facilities or medical professionals with a focus on ARFID on the Isle of Man”, Mr Green said, leaving families “without the essential support and resources needed to handle this complex disorder effectively”.
The petition, addressed to Manx Care, urges the health body to prioritise the establishment of a specialist clinic. Mr Green argued such a clinic would provide “specialised assessment, therapy, and ongoing support tailored specifically to the needs of ARFID patients and their families”.
He added: “An ARFID clinic would mean more than just support; it would be a beacon of hope for everyone combating this disorder.”
Mr Green urged residents to sign the petition, saying: “By working together, we can make a significant difference in the lives of many children and their families.”
