2024 has been a brilliant year for race walker Callum Gawne, and his last race of the year completed it in the best possible way.
Having finished joint second in the Parish Walk and won both the End to End Walk and the Syd Quirk Walk, Callum has turned his attention to improving his times and honing his race walking skills over shorter distances in the Winter League 10km races.
Last Sunday, Storm Darragh relented in time for Round 3 of the league to go ahead in sunny but cold conditions at Mooragh Park in Ramsey, and Callum found himself in a race-long battle with experienced campaigner Gianni Epifani who has been around the athletics scene for decades.

Just three seconds separated them at the end, with Callum clocking a new personal best of 49:05, with Gianni timed at 49:08.
There were a number of other excellent performances in the shorter races, and 2024 has also been a good year for ‘G’ after coming back strongly from a serious health issue.
With the welcome recent news that the league is being extended to five rounds, I hope to be able to cover the remaining races in more detail having only been able to attend the opening round so far.
