Chief Minister Alf Cannan has defended the Council of Ministers’ roadshows, insisting they play a vital role in shaping government policy despite criticism from some MHKs.
The events, which attracted 430 attendees last year, yielded public feedback on issues like immigration, mental health, housing, and ferry prices.
Mr Cannan highlighted tangible outcomes, including a £4 million investment in mental health services, a 1% income tax cut, and progress on affordable housing.
“We have committed to building 1,000 new affordable homes over the next 10 years—the first such public pledge in history,” he said. Ferry fares were also reduced by 10%, and a recruitment control framework was introduced to curb government costs.

However, MHK Lawrie Hooper questioned the roadshows’ direct impact, noting many policies were already underway. “What influence did the roadshows actually have? Nearly everything mentioned would have happened irrespective of them,” he argued.
Mr Cannan countered, stating the events “bring a valuable voice from the public” and informed decisions like the Steam Packet fare changes and immigration updates.
Julie Edge (MHK) pressed for specifics, asking for published turnaround plans for Manx Care and budget adherence metrics. Cannan clarified these were conference pledges but acknowledged ongoing work, including port security upgrades and renewable energy plans.
Tim Glover raised local opposition to wind farms, to which Mr Cannan told him, “we continue to listen,” emphasising the broader goal of 20MW of onshore renewable energy.
Rob Callister urged better balance between ministerial statements and public input, prompting Cannan to pledge “equal time for listening” at future events.
Jason Moorhouse and Chris Thomas suggested improvements, such as randomised attendee selection. Mr Cannan ruled this out but encouraged broader participation via Eventbrite.
The Chief Minister concluded by urging public attendance at this year’s roadshows, calling them a “unique opportunity” to influence policy.
“We will engage with every individual who wants to be heard,” he said.
