Chief Minister Alfred Cannan has confirmed he will contest the Ayre and Michael seat in the 2026 House of Keys election.
Mr Cannan says it has been “an honour and a privilege” to represent the constituency and to serve as Chief Minister for the past five years.
In a statement, Mr Cannan thanked constituents for their “support, kindness and encouragement”, and expressed gratitude to colleagues across government and the wider island.
Reflecting on a decade in senior roles, he said he had “stood up to be counted” through major national challenges, from delivering COVID economic support and shaping the island’s recovery agenda, to responding to the cost‑of‑living crisis, tightening border and immigration controls, and driving public service changes following the Ranson tribunal.
He said the island faced “many challenges” but also “many opportunities”, adding that recognising issues was only the first step: “delivering meaningful and achievable policy” was what mattered.
Mr Cannan will begin constituency visits and publish meeting arrangements in early August, once most of his remaining commitments as Chief Minister are complete.
He plans to set out a full policy agenda ahead of the election and has invited suggestions, feedback and meeting requests from residents.
Tim Johnston, Stephen Broad, Mary Phillips, Julia Bell and Paul Weatherall have previously declared their intention to stand in the election.
