A large cloud of steam and a loud bang emitted from Heysham’s nuclear power station was not a sign of any danger.
Site operator EDF confirmed that the cloud seen by residents of Morecambe was made of steam.
The cause of the cloud, EDF said, was a reactor unit “coming offline” unexpectedly at about 5pm last night.
A spokesperson for EDF said: “This steam venting is normal when a reactor comes offline and is no reason for concern.
“Work is underway to establish the cause of the trip and bring the unit back online.”
The site, which has two nuclear operating nuclear power stations, is due to go through a two phase closure in 2027 and 2030.
