Last Sunday saw a strong showing from Manx athletes at round three of the Indoor Athletics Series in Manchester.
A total of six athletes, representing Manx Harriers, Northern Athletic Club, and Western Athletics Club, achieved multiple PBs and broke records in various events.
Lara Smith broke the Under-17 island record in the pole vault, clearing 2.63m with a new indoor PB.
She also competed in the high jump and 200m, showing great progress.
Record Breaking
Tegan Thomson competed in her first indoor competition, Tegan cleared 1.51m with ease in the high jump.
Narrowly missing out on a new PB, she has set herself up well for the year ahead.
Sophie Kaighin clocked a new PB of 10.83 in the 60m hurdles. Despite struggling with time table clashes throughout the day, she displayed determination and strong potential in both the high jump and long jump.
Issy Kennaugh delivered outstanding performances, achieving three new PBs.
She completed the 60m hurdles in 10.08, raising her UK ranking to 25th. She also ran 8.59 in the 60m and 28.7 in the 200, setting a new indoor PB.
New PBs in Manchester
Zac Woodward soared to a new PB in the pole vault, clearing an impressive 2.93m, taking full advantage of specialised training he had the week before from the Manchester coach. He also set a new PB in the 600m.
Rory Turner faced an early challenge with clashing events and sickness affecting his warm up.
Unfortunately, he had to retire early from pole vault, however he managed to run a new PB and set a new Western Indoor Record in the 60m hurdles.
Later in the day, Rory ran an exciting 200m race, securing second place with another PB.
Next Competition
The next competitions for the athletes include the Vault Master and Round 4 of the Manchester Indoor Series at the start of February for Lara, Zac and Rory.
Sophie and Issy will compete at the Northern Indoor Under 15’s Championships in Sheffield in February, while Tegan will return for Round 5 of the Manchester Indoor Series in mid-February.
