Chief Minister Alf Cannan has said the ministerial system can find it difficult to reach and hold unified positions during times of crisis, describing flaws in its decision-making process.
Giving evidence to the Standing Committee on Constitutional, Legal Affairs and Justice, Mr Cannan reflected on his experience as a backbencher, Treasury Minister, and now Chief Minister.
“I think it’s a fair observation that, you know, clearly dealing with any difficult decisions, actually, politically, is tough,” he stated.
He identified a key challenge in ensuring robust decisions are made and communicated effectively.
“It can be difficult to reach the tougher decisions without having those watered down or diluted or indeed not getting through council,” Mr Cannan said.
