A Tynwald committee has called on the government to ensure all its land is registered by 2035.
It has also criticised the “disappointing” progress made since a 2021 target was set.
The Constitutional and Legal Affairs and Justice Committee found that only 25.86% of the island’s land is currently registered.
In evidence, Treasury Minister Dr Alex Allinson revealed that initial cost estimates for registering the entire Government estate could reach £7.8 million over 20 years.
The Committee’s report said: “Provided steady progress is made, it is realistic to plan for this to be completed by 2035.”
It also calls for legislation to reform land registration “as soon as possible” and for an educational programme to raise public awareness of the benefits of registration.
Not Materialised
Registrar General Ed Clague told the Committee: “The registration of government land comes from this Committee back in – when was the original Committee? – 2021 and that was one of the actions that government was meant to come forward with a project plan for registering all government land, and the project plan was meant to come into Tynwald by February 2022.
“That still has not materialised.”
The Council of Ministers has been asked to report back to Tynwald by May 2026 on how to maintain progress over the proposed timeline.
